Sparky
One of the nicest things about joining the NCS was getting the chance to meet and know my childhood hero, Charles M. Schulz. His friends called him Sparky. Sparky was everything you would want the creator of Peanuts to be. He would say that if you knew his strip you knew him. I can’t read his comic without hearing his distinctive Minnesota voice speaking for all the characters. His work and life continue to inspire me.
Nothing really prepares you for the demands of doing a daily comic strip. You wouldn’t think that something that looks so simple could be so hard. One of my first questions to Sparky after I had just started on Mutts was, “Does it get any easier?” He looked me straight in the eye and without hesitation stated an emphatic “No.” And then we laughed.
